I’ve just learned the truth behind the popular myth that hot drinks cool you down. This never made sense to me and now we can finally dispel the myth because I have learned the truth from my lazy Google search.
The common thinking behind it is that a hot drink will cause you to sweat more, which in turn causes you to cool down. Here’s the explanation, courtesy of wherever Google sent me.
The problem in the logic lies with the laws of thermodynamics. The amount of heat lost by sweating and evaporation will never exceed the amount of heat gained by the hot drink you’ve consumed.
The overall answer, is that hot tea will make you sweat more, and increase your cooling. But the amount of extra cooling won’t be enough to offset the heating-up from the tea.
