The film was called Wings and I’ve never heard of it. It took the first ever Best Picture oscar in 1929 and was the first and only silent film to win one.
It actually sounds pretty progressive for 1929:
The film is notable for several reasons: its aerial battles, a semi-nude scene involving Clara Bow, a drinking sequence in a Paris bar and some man-to-man kissing.
THE Clara Bow, semi-nude? How have I never heard of this film before? How have I never heard of Clara Bow before? How nude is semi-nude?
This nude, apparently. She looks as shocked as the censors must have been.
According to some guy the BBC spoke to, “Wings was definitely the Star Wars, Titanic or Avatar of its day.”
He means in terms of special effects, not that there were aliens or an iceberg in it.
So when The Artist wins this year, be sure to impress your friends by telling them that it is in fact only the second silent film to win a Best Picture Oscar and that you’ve just seen Clara Bow semi-nude.
I haven’t seen The Artist, but it does seem to be barreling down on Best Picture, doesn’t it?
I think it’s a silent shoe-in.
